A denver based company, Coolerado Corp, has been announced as the 2009 winner of the UC Davis Western Cooling Challenge. The UC Davis challenge was created to help cooling specialists design and build better dehumidifiers and for retailers to find information on how to install them.

The H-80 5 ton commercial air conditioning unit was entered by Coolerado and was announced the winner after the results of federal tests came back. The tests discovered that the 5 ton rooftop cooling unit actually uses less than half the standard amount of energy needed by a conventional unit.

The results of these tests came as a big surprise for some after they were released from the US Government’s National Renewable Energy Labratory. Mark Modera, the UC Davis challenge director, originally thought that the rooftop cooling unit would only use 40% less energy, he was wrong. However, after the results of the tests were concluded, it was found that the unit actually uses 80% less power compared to a standard commercial cooling unit.

The Coolerado H-80, five ton, unit is mainly designed for use on rooftops of small commercial buildings. Each unit has the ability to cool anywhere between 1,500 and 3,000 square feet, certainly alot more than a simple cieling fan.

No doubt with this announcement, a large number of companies will look to invest in a H-80 unit to try and improve their green profile. Air cooling and HEPA air purifier units and they are normally considered to be a luxury, for that reason they are considered to be extremely bad in the eyes of environmental campaigners. Now with this announcement, the H-80 should become popular with companies and slightly more popular with green campaigners. Although I assume lots of customers never really consider how the store is kept cool during the summer months.

Although these tests have proven to be good news for the industry, we could soon see more good news as a result of these tests. Many other companies have also submitted their cooling units, not just Coolerado, however, the results of these tests have not yet been released. We’ll have to wait to see if any of them beat the H-80.

It’s common knowledge that damp conditions in the home or workplace can cause all sorts of problems not only with the structure of the building, but with the health of the people who use it too. Common allergies and respiratory illnesses like asthma can develop or worsen if you are living in a damp environment. Once damp takes hold it becomes the source of other problems, and becomes more and more difficult to deal with. The most effective solution if you catch the problem early is to install the right type of air conditioners as a preventative measure to stop the damp before it has a chance to spread.

Unfortunately it’s not always immediately obvious that there is a problem, and a lot of the time people don’t realise it’s happening soon enough. I experienced this myself in a property when I was renting a house a few years ago, when a plumber called in to take a look at a broken shower discovered that under the bathroom floor was a lot of water and damp. The next day we were given a portable dehumidifier, telling us to make sure we left it on whenever the room was not in use. A de-humidifier draws the moisture from the surroundings, condenses it and collects it in a tank that needs to be regularly emptied – and it was astounding the amount of water it produced in the first few days. After a couple of weeks the worst of the problem was solved and we started to notice a huge difference. The air felt clearer and a housemate who had been suffering from a persistent cough for months suddenly found that he felt a whole lot better.

Of course, issues like this are not always solved this easily. In the case of a more severe damp problem a small air conditioner might not be enough and you may need to have the problem dealt with professionally to ensure the damp is completely gone and in no danger of coming back.
