Hepa Air Filters

Hepa Air Filters comes in all shapes and sizes.  But one thing is for sure, a true hepa is a blessing to an allergy sufferer.

What does Hepa mean?
The word HEPA is actually an acronym and it just stands for “High Efficiency Particulate Air.” HEPA is not necessarily a specific brand name of an air filtration system, but many air purifiers use this technology in their air cleaning devices.

Hepa is a type of air filtration system that can remove up to 99.97% of the most minute stubborn size airborne particles .

Who Uses True Hepa?
Most manufactures of air purifiers and cleaners are now using a Hepa filter because it is so effective at removing minute pollutants as I said before up to 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns from the air that passes through the filter.  So molds, pollen, dander, ragweed, and other pollutants are taken out of the air, even things like, smoke in general,  and dust mites.

Removing these pollutants from the air means you can finally take a deep breath of fresh air.

So what the heck is a Micron you ask?

A micron is simply a measure of length or size: “1 micron would be equaled to 1 millionth of a meter!”.

Particle that are 10 microns and less cannot be seen with the naked human eye.  For examples of everyday air pollutants and contaminants and their size in microns:

* Human Hair …………………………………. (70 – 100 microns)
* Human Sneeze ……………………………     (10 – 100 microns)
* Pet Dander …………………………………..  (0.5 – 100 microns)
* Pollen …………………………………………. (5 – 100 microns)
* Spores from Plants ………………………… (6 – 100 microns)
* Mold……………………………………………. (2 – 20 microns)
* Smoke …………………………………………. (.01 – 1 micron)
* Dust Mite Debris ……………………………  (0.5 – 50 microns)
* Household Dust ……………………………   (.05 – 100 microns)
* Skin Flakes …………………………………… (0.4 – 10 microns)
* Bacteria……………………………………….. (0.35 – 10 microns)

Because of the way our homes are insulated and build to be as “energy efficient” as possible, air from the outside gets trapped on the inside and there is no where for it to go, so it just accumulates in your home and this creates problems.

Numerous studies show that the quality of the air on the inside is much worst than outside, even in a large city.  So just like how we clean everything else, we should at least clean the air we breath.

Pollutants and Particles that are as small as 0.3 micron are very difficult particles to trap and contain within any filter.

Allergy and Asthmatic sufferers need hepa
Research shows that particles as small as 0.3 micron, when inhaled, can pass into the body’s respiratory system.  This will trigger your body’s histamines and you get the usual sniffles, sneezing, coughing.  For asthmatic this could be problematic. This is why ONLY  “True” HEPA filters are recommended by Allergists and Doctors.

Whenever you are buying a air filter, make sure it is a true hepa, as there are some that is “like hepa”, these are not the ones you want.  Look also at the size of microns the filter removes, you want at least 0.5.  Anything below that is even better.  The smaller the microns the hepa removers, the better the filter.

Check your air purifier model # and the replacement filter # to make sure you are getting the right size and fit for your air purifier.  If you are thinking about buying a air purifier, then make sure you get one with a true hepa filter.

They are making them to last 3-5 years now, all you have to do is to vacuum it every 3-6 months depending on your environment.
